Peter Slone

Retired Senior Vice President, Public Affairs, McKesson

Pete Slone joined McKesson as senior vice president of corporate public affairs in June 2015. In his role, Mr. Slone leads a team of policy, advocacy and stakeholder engagement professionals. His highly integrated team is dedicated to advancing strategic enterprise and business objectives through public policy engagement at the federal, state and local levels. Regulatory and public policy thought leadership is his team’s driving objective and placing McKesson atop the more influential policy brands in healthcare. Under his leadership, the Public Affairs team spearheaded a multi-disciplinary task force to advance two white papers with differentiated, impactful and actionable solutions to the opioid epidemic. Several of those recommendations were since enacted into law. Similarly, the company has been in the vanguard of policy work on data use and analytics that serve to enhance the consumer experience in the selection of therapy with greater transparency around coverage, cost and efficacy. McKesson has come to be seen as a preferred supply chain partner for government in its response to Covid-19 medical supply needs and vaccination distribution to administration site. McKesson now finds itself in the middle of today’s most important health policy debates.


During his thirteen years as vice president of global government affairs at Medtronic, Mr. Slone built a best in class policy advocacy organization and led the company through many important policy engagements, including: The Medical Device User Fee and Modernization Act, the Medicare Modernization Act, and the Affordable Care Act. From 2014-15, he led the critical Medtronic political strategy in support of the company’s high profile $49.9B acquisition of Covidien Ltd.


Prior to joining Medtronic, Slone worked in the U.S. House of Representatives as legislative director for a Member of Congress from his home state of Connecticut, and later as Associate Staff to the House Committee on Appropriations. Mr. Slone then was a managing director in the Washington, D.C. legislative consultancy BKSH & Associates (today Prime Policy Group) for 17years where he represented numerous prestigious health care and other clients including Medtronic, Baxter International, and the Santa Clara Valley, CA Health and Hospital System.


Mr. Slone holds a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently serves as the Chair of the Public Affairs Council and is a member of the boards of Kid Power DC and Compass. Mr. Slone is married to Wendee Wolfson and has two adult children, Ben and Haley.
