Tyeese Gaines

Physician Executive, Humana

Dr. Tyeese L. Gaines has experience across the medical profession including patient care, practice management, health literacy, hospital administration, education, and insurance. She is aboard-certified emergency physician who stills practices and a full-time physician executive at Humana.


In addition to her medical training, Dr. Gaines also has a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) from UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and a master’s degree in journalism from Northeastern University.
Dr. Gaines served in healthcare leadership for a large part of her career. She served as Medical Director & Chairman of the Emergency Department at Landmark Medical Center in Rhode Island; Medical Director of UltraMed Urgent Care in Skokie, Illinois; and Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Raritan Bay Medical Center. In 2017, she earned certification as aP hysician Executive (CPE) from the American Association of Physician Leaders, and a certificate in Urgent Care Management from the Urgent Care Association of America (UCA) in 2018.


Dr. Gaines simultaneously fostered a 20-year career in journalism, public relations and branding. She served as health editor of theGrio.com while owned by NBC for 3 years. Over the years, Dr. Ty has appeared as an on-air medical expert for local, online and national news shows and has written for various online, magazine and newspaper outlets. With her media agency, Doctor TyMedia, she offers public relations services for physicians and medical practices — including media training, branding, placement into news stories, and ghost-writing. She also hosts ane ducational YouTube series geared toward African-American patients, Black America’s Health.


Dr. Gaines currently serves on the HerHealthEq Board of Directors, the Center for the Business ofHealth Advisory Board, the National Medical Fellowships Alumni Council and the AMAProfessional Satisfaction & Practice Sustainability Advisory Board. Previously, she served on theStrategic Planning Council of the Student National Medical Association for 3 years and theAmerican Medical Association’s Minority Affairs Section Governing Council for 7 years, includingserving as Chair. She completed her residency training at Yale-New Haven Hospital where shewas chief resident, and later taught as a clinical instructor. In 2014, Dr. Gaines became a fellow inthe American College of Emergency Physicians, and in 2011 was honored with a Top 40 under40 award from the National Medical Association.
